New Year's Resolutions, Is It A Christian Thing To Do?

Welcome back reader, and if you are new, welcome and I hope this post or any of the materials shared on this website will be of interest to you and be a blessing to you today, or maybe tomorrow, or maybe you can share it with a friend or talk to someone you know and share your thoughts with them or with us. In my humble opinion, there's nothing wrong with making New Year's Resolutions as a Christian child of the Almighty God. I haven't seen it or read it in the Bible that it's wrong to do this practice.

However, Christian friend, please also be mindful or realize that God may or may not change those plans. It says in the Bible, in the book of Proverbs 16:9 it says: A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. Deviseth is defined in the Strong's Concordance as:to think, plan, esteem, calculate, invent, make a judgment, imagine, count. Isn't that interesting? :)

Below are a few questions you can ask yourself about the resolutions you make if you decide to make some for yourself this coming New Year 2016. I've asked myself these questions and am offering some insight for you also. Hope you will be blessed by it. :)

1) What is my motivation?

The Bible says in 1 Samuel 16:7:

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

a) Isn't it interesting that the Lord knows our motivations and intentions? The Word of the Bible says that the Lord sees what no man sees, we can't hide from Him my friend. As man, we tend to look at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart or inside of others. Therefore, it is humbling to know we should follow the Lord's example and also examine our own hearts and do/say what is right and beautiful in His eyes and not be wicked or take advantage of others. Let us have a pure heart and have no bad motivations towards our fellow mankind, Amen?

b) In Timothy 4:18 it reads:

For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

In other words, godliness is more profitable for us unto all things and that we should not focus too much heavily onto body exercises because there is much of a promise of life that is now and in the future. It is written in the Bible, and therefore I will hold onto this.

2) Am I Being Realistic?

Although many of us have many good intentions on trying to achieve our goals at the beginning of the year, many a times, we end up quitting when it is getting hard to reach the goal and sometimes we might even be giving us too much of a high expectation for ourselves. I know I've done this a few times, and I think the key to achieving goals is by starting off with small goals, work at them until they are achieved. Then as time goes on, one may give themselves another goal time with a bit more of a challenge and continue working on improving from the last goal achieved.

The goal is to achieve something that is doable and not to push yourself until you make yourself depressed for not reaching the goal. Too many times as Christians we sometimes forget that we may have goals in mind, but the Lord has bigger plans for us and He has our life and we should let Him direct our path and steps.

3) Is my New Year's resolution God-honoring or self-honoring?

This might be to some a silly question to ask yourself, but I think it's very important to ask yourself this question and to honestly pray about the resolution you have set for yourself. You and I were bought with a price, and therefore do you agree that we should talk to our Lord who knows us better than we do and we should talk to Him and ask Him about the resolution? I agree it should be done.

In the Bible, the book of James 1:5 says?

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Simply put, we are commanded to ask God for wisdom and that He gives it to all men freely. So, isn't it reassuring to know that our Lord knows what is best for us and we should not trust into what we want because it might be self-honoring and not God-honoring? Selah my brothers and sisters.

Lastly, this is the last question of this post. I hope you've read through all of this post and it has been a blessing to you and that you learned something new.

4) Am I willing to let God help me?

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Such a simple verse but so many of us don't trust and obey the Lord with it, it is to take a moment to read that verse and notice that it has the word all in it which means entirely and completely. So again let's read the verse again and note that Christ gives us the strength to do all things through Him. Friend, we can't do all things by ourselves because we are human, we are not perfect and we have a sinful nature, so why don't we trust Him with our resolutions or even just day to day activities and our lives to our Creator who loves us and takes care of us? I know that it would be a blessing to you, if you would trust and just let Him lead you. I think there is nothing wrong with letting God help me with my Godly resolutions and He give me the strength to them.

Lastly, I am sharing 2 popular verses that so many us know but don't apply in our lives. Please read it over, look up the words that stick out to you as you read in the Strong's concordance, and may all your endeavors be favorable and honorable to Jesus, our Lord and Savior. :) Thanks for reading!

The Christmas Story According to the Gospel of Matthew and Luke Compared

Below, I am sharing the 2 different versions of The Christmas Story as shared by the Gospel of Matthew and of Luke. It's interesting to read the differences between the 2 gospel texts quoted off from the King James Bible. Hope that you will enjoy reading it as much as I did. Merry Christmas!

This is the Christmas Story based on the Gospel of Matthew:


Matt 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Joy to The World, (The Story Behind The Song)

Joy To The World


No Christmas carol list would be complete without the exuberant celebration song, “Joy to the World.” This lively tune is easily memorized and simple to play on an instrument. But do you know the interesting story behind this well loved hymn?

Isaac Watts (1674-1748), author of around 750 songs, is commonly called “The Father of Hymns” due to his popularity as the first English hymn writer. A few of his most well-known songs still sung today include: Come ye that Love the Lord; When I Survey the Wondrous Cross; At the Cross; and the topic of today’s post, Joy to the World. Isaac Watts was a young man when hymns other than the Psalms were allowed to be sung in the Church of England. This gave way to Watts developing many beloved songs. Watts still based many of his songs on the Psalms, but he was especially interested in writing hymns based on the “Christian experience.”

Joy to the World was written in 1719 and based on Psalm 98:

4  Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. 5  Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. 
6  With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King. 
7  Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. 
8  Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together. 
9 Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.
 
If you notice the lyrics of the song, Joy to the World, you will see nothing about shepherds, a manger, wise men, angels, or any other character or element that we normally associate with the Christmas story. The reason being that Isaac Watts did not write Joy to the World to be a Christmas song. The original theme of this song was the second coming of the Lord. Christmas won’t always be a joyful time, but when Jesus comes back, even the rocks will sing!

Over 100 years later, in 1839, Lowell Mason adapted and arranged this song into a melody many believe to have been written by Handel. In my research, however, I have not been able to establish when or why this hymn became associated with Christmas. Certainly we can look at the message in the song and see that it can be applied to Christ’s appearance as a babe in Bethlehem. We must prepare room for Him in our hearts and lives. This is a joyous occasion!

As you hear and sing this beloved carol this season, think about the words. Yes, they apply to the Christmas story in that the Lord is come! We should rejoice! But, let the lyrics all point you to the reason Jesus came: to save the world. Be ready because He is coming again! What a glorious day THAT will be when the whole earth celebrates His appearing!

Dispelling The Myth Of Santa Claus (Putting CHRIST back in Christmas)

As many of us grew up knowing, we believe there was such a person who comes every Christmas (December 25th) with presents for good children and lumps of coal for the naughty ones. We all would therefore then work so hard every day of the year to just please this person that we were brought up to believe existed and that he really would bring us all the gifts we wanted. We were also taught to write a letter to Santa Claus and to send it to his address in the North Pole where he would read our letters and grant us our wish list.

What a sad sad lie that we've been told my dear friends and readers of this blog. We have been deceived to believe that Santa Claus was also known as St. Nicholas who was a bishop of Myra, dating back to the fourth century. The King James has several references that teaches us that we should not be deceived and I feel led to share one of these verses with you to consider and/or to focus on and it's my prayer that you can see the truth for yourself.

1 John 4:1 "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."

As the above verse advises to do, we are not believe every spirit but try them and see whether they are of God or not. It is so important that we should not teach our children to believe in all these false stories of Santa Claus because they deserve to know the truth.

Then there's also a big focus on materialism and blowing big money on lavish gifts . The meaning of giving to those in need (out of love) is also losing its' meaning in this prosperous world where most of us reside in and little thought is given to those who are in need even those who are in the very heart of the center of where we live.

Proverbs 19:17 "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again."

Isn't that such a wonderful promise of what the Lord has given to us? He wants us to remember that we that has pity upon the poor, we can lend it to them unto the Lord, and that for those of us who given to them, He will pay us again.

But I can't end this message without what the Lord really desires me to do which is to make mention of how as a Christian, I would like to put CHRIST back into Christmas.

This is the Holy Bible's account of how Christ came into the world via the miracle conception that His mother Mary encountered and that she was the chosen one to give birth to Him.

Matthew 1:18: "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost."

Matthew 1:21: "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

My Lord Jesus is the reason for this Christmas season, He came to this Earth in human form, so He may know our feelings, our thoughts and our cares of the world. But, He is the almighty Savior and He loves us very much. There are people who feel they must fill their lives with all the latest gadgets, the fastest car(s), the largest house, but the Lord tells us not to focus on these things.

Please consider to follow the Lord today, and know in your heart that You know where Your soul will be after you passed from this earth. Please fill your hearts with joy and also with the spirit of Jesus in you and to remember others during this season whether it be friends, family or even a stranger in need. It's my prayer that you have or will have Christ in your Christmas this year and always. <3

Black Friday Versus Good Friday

Today is the 4th Friday of November, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, and it's been widely known as Black Friday, the day of lots of retail sales and some even super amazing sales that last only for a few hours and they start off even well before sunrise as known as Doorcrashers sales.

Have you ever went Black Friday shopping and bought something like a large screen flat screen television at Walmart that costed you $199 but you had to line up overnight and into the wee early hours in the morning just to purchase it? Or have you ever ate a very early Thanksgiving supper meal at 3:00 p.m just so you can be one of the first 10 customers waiting in line at Best Buy to buy the newest gaming console released because it was a special edition?

How does it make you feel when you buy these items? Does it make you feel super happy that you were able to be one of the first persons to own something that you thought would "satisfy" and fill "your spirit" with much happiness and you just couldn't wait to get home and to show it off to your friends and/or family members or even neighbors?

I can honestly say, I've never gone Black Friday shopping ever maybe because I don't like crowds and I don't think it's worth it to me that I have to wait in line for so many hours and have a small chance to be able to buy one of the doorcrasher sale items at the discounted price. Don't get me wrong, I love shopping and I love deep discounts and clearance sales but it's not worth it to me to go shopping on the most busiest shopping day of the year in America.

Since getting Saved, the Lord has showed me that I should use each day wisely He has given to me and not to be lazy or be idle. Please read and consider mindfully the 2 verses below. Please note, in the King James Bible, the word slothful refers to the modern day word meaning lazy.

Psalm 90:12     
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Hebrews 6:12 

That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.    What if I told you my friend that our time on Earth and in this world is very limited and everything we ever owned and even our own life is all but like a water vapour and it vanishes into thin air in a split second and that you could not bring anything with you at the time of your death. I'm telling you the honest truth my friend: the house you own, the car(s) you have, the pet(s) you care for, the child(ren) you might have, the electronics, the books, the money, everything that you ever owned are still going to remain on the physical world but your soul/spirit will leave this earth behind and be judged by the Holy God to where you will spend your eternity. There is good news to this seemingly "sad" tale my friend, it is the Lord Jesus Christ who came onto this Earth over 2000 years ago on this earth, and He took your place on the cross to die for your and my sins. His Father God in Heaven loved the world so much that He gave us His son Lord Jesus to die for us and our sins, and if you believe in your whole heart that He died on the cross for you, that He is a holy and just God, you may be Saved and can have eternal life in Heaven.   As a child you were probably told the Easter Story and thought and believed that Jesus Christ was put to death on Good Friday and He rose up from the dead and went up to Heaven to be with His Father God on Easter Sunday. However, I want to correct you and urge you to look at the Scriptures and find out for yourself that Jesus Christ, the Savior actually died on Thursday.   So, in closing this blog, I would like to urge you to consider and challenge yourself to see what you are believing in, is it more important for you to have material things on Earth now that you can't bring with you anywhere when you die or is eternal and everlasting life in Heaven more important to you?   In closing, I will share two more Bible verses with you, one is about physical life is all but a vapour and probably the most well known verse in the Bible about eternal life. Happy Thanksgiving Day Eve

It's the eve of Thanksgiving Day in the United States of America today, and for Canadians it was back in the middle of October, 2nd Monday of the month to be exact. I was told that the Thanksgiving Day (holiday) is a holiday observed only in North America as a way of thanking the Native American Indians for their food they shared with the earliest settlers to (North) America and another story was the way the earliest Christian settlers thanked the Lord (God) who provided them with a plentiful harvest that will keep them well nourished when the colder winterlike weather approached the land of Freedom and Free.

I would like to share some thoughts that the Lord has shared with me. My hope is that this post will be glorifying in His eyes and He will use it for His Goodness.

(1) When we are thankful for the goodness of God in our lives, it touches the very heart of God and encourages Him to shower even more blessings upon us. A thankful heart is truly a floodgate to the blessings and goodness of God in our lives!

Psalms 37:4, "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."

(2) One of the vital steps to developing a thankful personality, is to meditate the things that you have in your life to be thankful for. Make a list of the things God has done for you, and keep those things on your mind throughout the day. It may take a little more work at first, especially if your mind is programmed to think negatively. This process is the tearing down of strongholds and the renewing of your mind as God's Word tells us:

Romans 12:2, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

(3) We renew our minds by feeding and meditating on uplifting things (blessings in our lives) and the truth in God's Word. A pastor can help feed us the truth is he or she is preaching the Word of God as the Word was meant to be preached, but it is upto us to take what we hear and allow our minds to feast upon it.

About the author
Gene Bartlett was born on May 4, 1918 in Greenwood, Arkansas. He was the son of songwriter Eugene Bartlett, Sr. and was educated at John Brown University (BA), & Oklahoma Baptist University (BM, honorary DMus). He served as minister of music at three Baptist churches in Arkansas; at Trinity Baptist Church, Oklahoma City (1947-54); and Director of Church Music for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (1954). He was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2000. He died on July 10, 1988, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

I got Saved 7 years ago on June 29th, this was the 2nd chance the Lord gave to me for this life. My life before that day was very hard and miserable but since giving my life over to the Lord, I have so much peace and feel so loved it is the best feeling of all. It is a prayer of mine that the Lord will set my soul afire for him and to be used by Him to do His Will daily.

"I Have Decided to Follow Jesus" is a Christian hymn originating from India.
The lyrics are based on the last words of a man in Assam, north-east India, who along with his family was converted to Christianity in the middle of the 19th century through the efforts of a Welsh missionary. Called to renounce his faith by the village chief, the convert declared, "I have decided to follow Jesus." In response to threats to his family, he continued, "Though no one joins me, still I will follow." His wife was killed, and he was executed while singing, "The cross before me, the world behind me." This display of faith is reported to have led to the conversion of the chief and others in the village
The formation of these words into a hymn is attributed to the Indian missionary Sadhu Sundar Singh. The melody is also Indian, and entitled "Assam" after the region where the text originated. The fierce opposition is possible as various tribes in that area were formerly renowned for head-hunting.
An American hymn editor, William Jensen Reynolds, composed an arrangement which was included in the 1959 Assembly Songbook. His version became a regular feature of Billy Graham's evangelistic meetings in America and elsewhere, spreading its popularity.
Due to the lyrics' explicit focus on the believer's own commitment, the hymn is cited as a prime example of decision theology, emphasising the human response rather than the action of God in giving faith.This has led to its exclusion from some hymnals.A Lutheran writer noted, "It definitely has a different meaning when we sing it than it did for the person who composed it."
